AirAsia Develops Young Talents with PJ Rangers Junior Tryouts

50 promising young footballers from Petaling Jaya were selected to join PJ Rangers youth team

PETALING JAYA, 5 August 2017 – AirAsia continues its efforts to develop young and upcoming talents through the AirAsia – PJ Rangers Junior Tryouts in Petaling Jaya which is an open session for Under-14 and Under-16 players. Selected players will join PJ Rangers as part of their junior squads to play in the upcoming AirAsia KL Junior League.

The young football players went through an intensive tryouts session led by PJ Rangers Head Coach, Mohd Zan while being advised by a Technical Lead Consultant for PJ Rangers youth program. 150 hopeful youngsters from Petaling Jaya participated in the tryouts as PJ Rangers aim to build a youth team of home-grown talents while giving them a platform to further develop their talents.

A total of 50 talented youngsters were chosen, 25 for Under-14 category and 25 for Under-16 Category. Both group of players will go on to represent the PJ Rangers under-14 and under-16 football team to compete in the AirAsia-KL Junior League, which will kick off from 19 August 2017 at New Camp Bandar Utama, Damansara.

During the tryouts session, the players were divided into 2 groups of under-14 and under-16 where they were segregated according to the position that they play in and were put into teams. Each team then played for ten minutes and each player were monitored and given points based on their individual performance. Points were given based on 5 main criteria, which are technique, tactical awareness, physical attributes, coordination and mental strength/psychological.

AirAsia FC Signs 22 New Players and Reveals Plans for 2017

  • Engaging the grassroot level: AirAsia FC to be named as Petaling Jaya Rangers FC

  • Exclusive partnership with QPR to build a football academy

AirAsia FC today announced the signing of 22 new players in preparation for the FAM Cup 2017 with several notable names from Johor Darul Ta’zim II FC (JDT2), KL and Malacca United.

The new line-up includes seasoned hands Tuah Iskandar (JDT2), Fahrul Razi (KL), and six players from Malacca United among others. The players reported for training on December 1 under head coach Mat Zan Mat Aris at the MMU Stadium.

During the press conference, the Club also revealed its plans for next year with the focus on engaging communities. As part of this initiative, AirAsia FC will be rebranded as the Petaling Jaya Rangers FC come 2017. The Club aims to actively engage with and serve football fans in the area.

In an effort to support football development in Malaysia and in the region, AirAsia FC unveiled an exclusive partnership with Queens Park Rangers (QPR) to start a football academy. The academy aims to nurture and train the next generation of renowned footballers to play in the top flight of Malaysian football. Working together with the team, QPR will lend their expertise in training the players, local coaches and staff.

Formed in 2011, AirAsia FC debuted in the Selangor Super League and finished Top 4 three years later to qualify in the FAM Cup. The Club competed in the 2015 FAM Cup for the first time and finished 7th in the league. In 2016, AirAsia FC reached the semi-finals of the FAM Cup, one step from promotion to the Malaysian Premier League.
